Your resume is a critical factor when it comes to getting an interview. A strong and polished one can go a long way with a potential employer. While you know you must include work experience and education, should you list other factors, like hobbies, so you stand among other candidates?

In most cases, it’s not a good idea to put hobbies on your resume. This is simply because it takes up space that could otherwise be used to promote your skills, accomplishments and background.

In addition, depending on your hobby, it could make you appear unprofessional and impact the hiring manager’s impression of you. For instance, they don’t need to know you play in a corn hole league or that you brew beer in your basement.

That said, there are a few instances where listing hobbies is actually a good idea. If your hobby is in alignment with the company and their vision and mission, then it makes perfect sense to include it. For example:

  • If you take in shelter pets and you’re interviewing at a non-profit or a pet-related employer, then it’s a good idea to highlight your passion for helping animals.
  • If you’re a volunteer basketball coach and applying for a management position, you’ll be able to put your coaching skills to use and should showcase them on your resume.
  • In addition, if you have a personal blog and you’re applying for a job where writing skills are key, then send along a link for the hiring manager to review your work before a potential interview.

Also, another situation where you’d want to list your hobbies is if the employer asks for them. Most don’t in their job postings. However, some do and see it as a way to identify those candidates who are a good cultural fit for their organization.

If a company doesn’t ask for hobbies and you’re not sure whether to include them, err on the side of caution. If it feels comfortable, bring them up during the job interview if the hiring manager asks what you like to do during your time off. Otherwise, stick to focusing on the professional side of your life and promoting why you’re a great fit for the job.
