I Submitted My Resume with a Mistake…What Do I Do?

by The ResumeSpice Team | Jul 21, 2021 | Resume Writing

Job candidates have nightmares about certain scenarios, like missing the submission deadline for their dream job or completely bombing an interview answer. Another big one involves sending in a resume, only to realize after you click “submit” that there was a mistake on it. When this happens, what do you do?

If it’s a small mistake.

It depends. If the mistake is small, like an extra line break, the hiring manager might not even notice it. If you resend your resume with an explanation, you could call attention to something the manager wasn’t aware of.

If it’s a big mistake.

However, if you make a big mistake, like misspelling the company name or a typo in your phone number, you’re better off dealing with it directly and quickly. It could actually get in the way of getting called for an interview. So try to get ahead of it and resend your resume with a note of apology for the mistake.

Don’t wait.

If the hiring manager reviews your resume and sees the mistake, chances are you won’t change their mind by resending it error-free. However, if they have yet to look at the resume and receive your new one, they might simply delete the old one. They’ll only see the new one, as a result.

If you do resend your resume, make sure you’re professional in the email you send. Avoid a long excuse and instead just be brief with your explanation. Managers understand these things happen and are often willing to give candidates a second chance.

You can simply say something, such as:

“My apologies. I just realized I sent you my resume with an old phone number. Can I send you my updated one? I’ve attached my resume with the corrected number. Thank you.”

Proofread, proofread, proofread next time.

Don’t make this mistake twice. If you send a resume in with a mistake, make sure you step up your proofreading efforts for the next batch of resumes you submit. You don’t want one little typo to sabotage your chance of landing a great position.

Even better, ask a trusted friend or family member to read it through for you. They’ll be able to spot issues you might have missed and will give you peace of mind about sending in your resume next time.
